Karishma & Bhrat’s Wedding at Taj Mussoorie Foothills, Dehradun: A Sindhi Wedding in the Hills

Wedding · Taj Mussoorie Foothills, Dehradun

Karishma grew up in Dubai and Bhrat lives in London. For years they somehow never crossed paths, even at the Sindhi gatherings where everyone seems to know everyone, until one online message in early 2024 started it all. Not long after, Bhrat flew out to Dubai to meet her in person, and about six months later he proposed in Cappadocia, with hot air balloons drifting over them.

For the wedding they chose Taj Mussoorie Foothills, a resort tucked into the green slopes outside Dehradun, where the mountains sit behind almost every frame. There was a Mehendi Carnival, a sangeet and the wedding itself, and here’s how each one looked.

Mehendi Carnival

The Mehendi Carnival by the pool was the afternoon everyone let go. Pink and blue ribbons hung over the whole terrace, there was a dhol, a kissing booth and a letter game that got far more competitive than anyone expected. Karishma wore a rainbow-striped lehenga and Bhrat a printed jacket in just as many colours, and between the dancing we took them around the gardens for a few portraits. Even the youngest guests joined in, and one little girl refused to let go of the person holding her all afternoon.

Sangeet

Sangeet night was the dressed-up one. Karishma changed into a silver sequinned lehenga and Bhrat into a black embroidered sherwani, the stage glittered, bubbles drifted over the dance floor, and family and friends took turns performing. The dancing went on well past midnight.

The wedding

The wedding morning started slowly: Bhrat got ready under a huge crystal chandelier, and Karishma’s bridesmaids arrived in pastel lehengas. The mandap brought the hills indoors with soft flowers, greenery and a dreamy, pale palette, and a white floral tunnel led guests in. Karishma wore coral and Bhrat ivory. She walked in under a canopy of flowers held up by her family, through a low cloud of fog, and the varmala happened on flower-lined garden steps.

Then it started to rain gently during the ceremony, which nobody had planned for, and somehow it only made the pictures better. By the time the pheras were done it was dark.
