Wedding · The Ritz-Carlton, Pune
Vipul and Sasha met at work. For a long time they were simply two colleagues who couldn’t stop chatting, and then, without any big moment, they were a couple.
Their proposal story starts at The Ritz-Carlton, Pune, the same hotel where they would later get married. Vipul’s first attempt was meant to happen over a candlelit dinner, but another couple a few tables away got engaged first, with the whole room watching, and he decided to wait. He tried again out in the valleys, under lights and flowers, and Sasha’s answer came before the question was even over.
There was no wedding planner either. Sasha’s mother ran the show, and family and friends handled everything from the flowers to the last-minute changes. You could feel it at every function: it was warm, personal and very much theirs.
We photographed and filmed all four functions, from a sunny haldi to a sangeet that went on until late. Here’s how each one looked.
Haldi
The haldi was set up outdoors among the trees: a cane backdrop strung with marigolds, clay pots, wooden seating and petals scattered across the grass. Sasha wore yellow, her friends came in powder blue, and the yellow sunglasses came out early.
Mehendi
For the mehendi, pink took over. Bright pink bougainvillea, ivory cushions and carved wooden furniture made a relaxed corner for the afternoon. Sasha wore olive green with a mirror-work blouse and Vipul wore pink, and her drink came in a tumbler that read “Vipul ki Dulhan”. There was music, a lot of laughing, and family on the dance floor all afternoon.
Sangeet
The sangeet was the glamorous one. The stage had a wall of greenery hung with disco balls and a neon sign, and Vipul and Sasha walked in surrounded by friends, with phone torches lit all around them. Sasha wore a bronze sequinned gown and Vipul a black patterned jacket. Their friends performed, the two of them danced together on stage, and the dance floor stayed full until late.
The wedding
The wedding was the quietest and most traditional of the four. Printed fabrics, tuberoses and brass set the mood, and strings of jasmine with banana leaves framed the way in.
Sasha wore a red silk saree with gold jewellery and jasmine in her hair, and walked in with her family. Vipul arrived under a red ceremonial umbrella, in ivory with a gold-bordered white dhoti. When the family showered them with petals during the rituals, the two of them couldn’t stop laughing. Afterwards we took them out for a few portraits under the palms.
