Mohit & Simran’s Wedding at The President, Mumbai: Five Functions, Five Moods

Wedding · The President, Mumbai

Simran and her mother-in-law planned the décor together, and between them every function got its own personality. They also made one rule early on: fresh flowers were saved for the wedding ceremony. Every other event had to look beautiful without them, so it was wicker, fabric, dried branches and a lot of imagination instead.

The celebrations were at The President in Mumbai, and we photographed all five functions, from a quiet Anand Karaj to a sangeet that felt like opening night at the theatre. Here’s how each one looked.

Anand Karaj

The Anand Karaj was the gentlest part of the wedding. Marigolds framed the Guru Granth Sahib. Mohit chose blush pink for his sherwani, and Simran’s lehenga was a pale pastel covered in delicate thread embroidery. In almost every frame from the ceremony, the two of them are smiling.

Haldi

The haldi went boho. Wicker chairs, bare branches and yellow marigolds sat under a canopy in the afternoon sun, and the dress code was mustard and ochre. It got loud very quickly, and our favourite frames are the ones where everyone stopped posing and just laughed.

Mehendi

The mehendi was the most colourful of the five. Bright fabric hung overhead, there were tassels on everything and oversized organza flowers in the corners. Simran wore orange, Mohit a deep red kurta, and the dance floor barely emptied all evening.

Sangeet

For the sangeet, the room turned into a theatre: a red velvet stage ringed with marquee lights, half Bollywood and half Broadway. Simran changed into a sparkling blue gown, the couple performed together, and even the bar played along, dressed up as a cinema box office because the two of them love the movies.

The wedding

This was the one function with fresh flowers, and it showed. Ivory blooms poured down around the mandap with gold bells hung between them. Simran’s lehenga was a classic bridal red covered in zardosi, and Mohit matched the mandap in ivory.

Mohit’s baraat came down a long, glossy aisle that reflected every dancing guest, and there was still time for a few quiet portraits of Simran on the lawn in her red lehenga.
